Your Most Common Neocate Questions Answered

Whether you are new to Neocate, or your child has been on it for a few years, it is natural to have questions about the formula, and how it works. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions we have been receiving lately, and are using this blog post to answer them. We hope that after reading this post, your questions will be answered!

Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions:

What makes Neocate different from the formulas at the grocery store?

Neocate is a specialized elemental nutrition product. The formulas you find at the grocery contain whole proteins or protein fragments (hydrolysates), which are derived from cow milk or soy. These formulas have more potential to cause an allergic response than nutrition products made from free amino acids.

How long will an open can of Neocate last?  When does it expire? Is it good past the expiration date?

Neocate is good for 30 days after you open the can.  You can find the expiration date on the bottom of each can. We do not recommend using any Neocate product after the expiration date.

How long can Neocate be kept once it has been prepared?

Neocate can be kept at room temperature for four hours. If your baby has fed from the bottle, you should discard any remaining formula within an hour to prevent spoiling. Prepared Neocate can be kept in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Visit Neocate’s mixing instructions for more information.

How long can Neocate hang for tube feeding after being mixed?

Four hours maximum. Discard any remaining formula after four hours and prepare a new batch.

The instructions on the can say to use sterile water. I don’t know what sterile water is. How can I get it? Can I use bottled water?

To make sterile water, bring water to a rolling boil for two minutes and allow it to cool for 20 to 30 minutes. You can store sterile water in sterile glassware with a clean lid. Sterile water should be used within 24 hours. Many parents find it easiest to boil water in the morning to last for the whole day. Most bottled water is not sterile, unless the label specifically states “sterile” on the label. Please check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about the need to use sterile water to prepare Neocate Infant DHA/ARA.

When will I see an improvement in my child after starting Neocate?

Some children show improvement quickly while others may take a little longer. Severe food allergies can cause inflammation and irritation. As with a cut or burn, this takes time to heal.

Controlled clinical studies with a food elimination diet and Neocate showed improvement in diarrhea, blood in stool and vomiting in as little as three days in infants and children with diagnosed cow milk allergy. Improvement in gastroesophageal reflux and skin irritations, such as eczema and atopic dermatitis, were reported in 14 days.

For children on an elimination diet, it’s important to stick to your doctor or dietitian’s instructions.

  • If you’re trying a maternal elimination diet and still breast-feeding, eat only the foods your doctor or dietitian suggests.
  • If you’re trying an elimination diet with your child using Neocate, do not introduce any other formula or foods until directed by your doctor or dietitian.

My baby’s bowel movements have changed since starting Neocate. Is this normal?

Yes, this is perfectly normal and common. Stools can change in consistency and color when a child is introduced to an hypoallergenic formula like Neocate. The reason for green is that Neocate is a very simple form of nutrition. It’s a natural effect of taking a formula like Neocate and does not affect your baby’s health—that’s why our motto is “Green Is Glorious.”

Note: Green stools are less common on formulas with prebiotic fiber, like Neocate Syneo Infant or Neocate Junior. You can read more about changes in stool with formulas like Neocate here. What other questions can we answer for you?

Hi Sally, Thank you for reaching out to Nutricia North America regarding Neocate. Neocate LCP is not available in the United States or Canada. We do carry Neocate Infant DHA/ARA which is very similar to Neocate LCP. We encourage you to reach out to your local Nutricia office if you have specific questions regarding Neocate LCP. To address some of your mixing questions when using Nutricia's powdered formulas: We recommend water no warmer than about 50°C (122°F), which ensures nutrient levels are not affected. We suggest using warm water (about 50°C) for the best solubility, but it doesn't matter if the water goes below 50°C as long as it was previously boiled. Once the water is mixed with formula, you can keep at room temperature for 2 hours or in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. It can be reheated after storage in the refrigerator.

I have a few questions about Neocate LCP for my 9 week old please: 1. Neocate LCP, is the powder sterile? 2. If the powder is not sterile, and the recommendation is to use water no hotter than 50 degrees Celsius, is a safe level of bacteria killed in the prepared feed, in order for it to be safe for babies to consume? Do you have any evidence for this that I could look at please? 3. Neocate LCP, can I cool boiled water for 30 minutes exactly then prepare the feed? 4. What would happen to the prepared feed if I used water hotter than 50 degrees Celsius? 5. What would happen to the prepared feed if I used water cooler than 50 degrees Celsius? 6. I currently wait 30 minutes after the water has boiled. I then prepare the feed. It then takes an additional 30 to 35 minutes for the water to cool sufficiently in order for my baby to drink the prepared feed. Is there a way of cooling this down faster? For example, once the powder has been mixed with 50°C water, and the feed is prepared, can the bottle be run under cold water in order to cool the feed down faster? Would this effect the formula? 7. For Neocate LCP, once the feed has been prepared, how long will it last at room temperature? Can it be stored in the fridge and reheated later? Thank you

Hello Candice, thank you for your interest in our Neocate products. Neocate DHA/ARA and Neocate LCP are very similar products. There may be different micronutrient regulations based on the governing body. Please discuss these differences with your son's healthcare team.
